This once pretty fishing village now epitomises the success of Algarve’s mass-market tourism, catering almost entirely for package tours, with tourist-geared restaurants, dozen of bars and nightclubs, and towers of apartment hotels and holiday flats on all the surrounding hillsides. The extensive beaches are still an attraction, and there is a picturesque quality to the old town’s steep and narrow back streets and its small fishing harbour. The cobbled streets hold audience to buskers and artisan stalls. Albufeira’s modern extension is Montechoro, 3km to the east. ‘The Strip’ leading up from Praia da Oura and crossing the resort area of Areias de São João, is packed with more hotels, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. There is a selection of good beaches, and for a bit of local flavour head for Praia dos Pescadores, where you can still see the fishermen mending their nets beside brightly painted boats. Other recommended beaches are Praia de Balaia, Praia de Falésia, Praia de Galé, and Olhos d’Agua. The new Marina is surrounded by colourful Algarve apartments to the west side of the town.
