From Vila Real to Castro Marim take the quiet back road that hugs the river for 14km and you pass by Foz de Odeleite, Álamo with its Roman dam, Guerreiros do Rio to Alcoutim. Set on the banks of the Guadiana, the small fortified town of Alcoutim with pretty cobbled streets enjoys truly breathtaking views of the Algarvian mountains and Spanish hills. Alcoutim’s mirror image across the river is the Spanish village of Sanlúcar. A small ferry will take you across the slow moving waters of the Guadiana to this hill top fortress. Whatever your pleasure, this relatively undiscovered and undisturbed area offers something for everyone and is easily accessible from Faro airport with a 50 minute drive. The Alcoutim area is fast becoming a much sought after location for Algarve property purchase with new golf courses and stylish construction under way.
