LOULÉ

One of the Algarve’s largest inland towns, Loulé is a former Roman and Moorish settlement with an attractive old quarter and castle ruins. Loulé has some curious houses with pierced Moorish chimneys of mortar or plaster. The fine Parish church of San Tiago has a melon shaped dome, renaissance archways and a side chapel of tiles showing St. Michael at the Last Judgement. The town is home to some 20,000 residents, descendants of the Moslem community and great coppersmiths, saddlers, basket makers and potters. The weekly market attracts tourists from all along the Algarve where the locally produced crafts are sold. To the west of the town is a hilltop Church that is built on the site of a 16th Century chapel. This is the destination of an annual religious procession that requires some physical effort on the part of the bearers of the church's religious shrines. Another important event is the annual Carnival in February that is considered to be one of the best in Portugal, with parades, floats and lots of singing and dancing. Skirting the edge of the ‘Golden Triangle’ and very popular with rural aspects and lovely villas make this an ideal location for Algarve property purchase.
