The Algarve’s biggest fishing port, dating from the 18th century, is a clamorous, sprawling town beside a vast precinct of docks, canning factories and salt works. Buried at the historical centre is an appealing little town, surprisingly well preserved and non touristy. The fisherman’s quarter is a compact knot of whitewashed, cubical houses, with tiled fronts and flat roofs. Good beaches are a ferry boat ride away to the islands of Farol, Armona and Culatra. Olhão is best known for its Festival do Marisco, a seafood festival with food stalls, folk and modern music, held during the month of August. This popular fishing village is expanding with the construction of a superb new marina and luxury Algarve apartments. Olhão and outlying areas are lesser known & unspoilt yet are growing in popularity and offer rural Algarve properties as well as modern apartments, villas and townhouses at sensible prices.
