TAVIRA

This picturesque town straddles the Rio Gilão 3 km from the coast and is still remarkably unspoilt. Elegant 18th century houses border the river, castle ruins overlook at least 37 churches in a tangle of old streets, 16th century mansions line the back streets and fishing boats bob at the quay. The population is in the region of 20,000 inhabitants and since the decline of the tuna fishing and canning industry have relied heavily on tourism for their income. Tourism is now increasing with the opening of new golf courses in the near vicinity. The beach for this town lies past the salt pans and is reached by a ferryboat that takes the visitor to the sandy-bar island known as Ilha de Tavira, part of the Ria Formosa natural park. This is fast becoming a very popular area for Algarve property purchase. Traditional Algarve townhouses are being renovated and stylish villas and quaint farmhouses are top of the list for desirable Algarve property.
