VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTÓNIO

Although architecturally impressive, thanks to the Marquês de Pombal who rebuilt the town after it was destroyed by floods in 1744, Vila Real is no longer a vital frontier post and ferry crossing point for Spain. With the construction to the north of a new bridge in 1991 across the River Guadiana connecting Seville in Spain with the Algarve, the popularity of this town has diminished. However, it remains a busy shopping destination mainly for cheaply priced linen, towels and alcohol. Its is also the base for boating and bilking trips along the Guadiana to the charming town of Alcoutim The population of approximately 14,000 inhabitants earn their living either in the tourist industry, fishing or trading across the river with their Spanish neighbours at Ayamonte. The holiday resort of Monte Gordo is 4Km along the coast, and is said to the have the warmest waters of the Algarve coastline. Town renovation has opened the way to newly constructed Algarve apartments enjoying river views and priced encouraging for new investors to the Algarve property
